ok russ, why three blogs
instead of one?
Well, it started with an intuition (and three registered domains laying around). Originally the domains were for related but separate purposes, but, as I developed the idea of the blogs, I knew they hooked together somehow. And that the how would become clear after I started.
No guarantees that how won’t become clearer later, but this is where I am today.
A recent survey of american adoption of digital technologies found that:
- 31% loved their PCs and cell phones and all the ways they could
connect to others. - 20% were adept at using those tools but stressed about it.
- 49% avoided digital technologies.
Now the interesting thing was how this broke out into 10 groups with the five groups in the 31% having median ages around 30 years of age, and the couple of groups in the 20% having median ages in the early 40’s, the groups in the 49% had median ages in the late 50’s.
So, if you think of this as a digital divide - those loving the tools and adept with them vs those disliking the tools and avoiding them - then the divide is age related.
So I toyed with tying these three blogs to those three groups. But there are exceptions to the age grouping - in fact I’m an exception. My father is an exception. And I began to think about the sandwich generation caught between training the younger generation and assisting the older generation adapt to this new digital world.
And I began to think of the blogs as having to do with a person’s perspective, regardless of age or reason for their perspective. So we have:
btw.net - Learning the digital experience - partly “how-to”/”how do i…” and partly clues on what is possible.
btw2.net - Sharing the digital experience - partly the sandwich generation and partly sharing stories, offering conversation.
portfoliolife.net - Living the digital experience - partly conversation, partly nudges toward a deeper look.
comments and suggestions appreciated,
